The maintenance engineer walks up to a compressed air header and needs a quick flow reading to confirm whether a purge line is passing the expected volume. There is no power at the tapping point, and the project budget does not justify a magnetic or vortex meter. A float type air flow meter, also called a rotameter or variable area flow meter, is the practical answer. It is simple, visual, and operates without external power.
This guide explains how a float type air flow meter works, where it makes sense, how to read it, and what to verify before purchasing one for your air or gas line.
What Is a Float Type Air Flow Meter?
A float type air flow meter uses a vertically mounted tapered tube with a float inside. The tube is narrower at the inlet and widens toward the outlet, so the annular gap between the float and the tube wall grows as the float rises. The float stops at the position where the drag force of the flowing gas balances its apparent weight. That position corresponds to a specific volumetric flow rate, which can be read directly from the scale printed on the tube.
Because the open area around the float changes while the pressure drop across the meter stays nearly constant, these instruments are also known as variable area flow meters. The float does not have to be a sphere; manufacturers use balls, cones, and slotted plummets depending on the range and medium. Since the float position is visible through the tube, a local reading requires no power, no amplifier, and no signal cable.
Common Applications for Float Type Air Flow Meters
Float type air flow meters are among the most cost-effective ways to measure air and gas flow in pipe sizes up to roughly DN80. Typical duties include:
- Compressed air monitoring for branch lines, dryers, and individual machines
- Aeration air in wastewater treatment basins and aquaculture tanks
- Combustion air and instrument air for boilers, gas analyzers, and purging panels
- Laboratory gas supplies for test benches, mixing stations, and calibration rigs
- Medical oxygen concentrators and respiratory therapy equipment
- Low-pressure argon, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen distribution lines
The same construction also handles water and light chemical media, but air and gas duty is where the low pressure loss and instant visual readout are hardest to beat. For argon and carbon dioxide at low pressure, an acrylic rotameter such as the LZM6T acrylic rotameter for argon and carbon dioxide offers a compact panel-mount solution.

Reading a float type air flow meter correctly starts with knowing which part of the float to use. Most rotameters are read at the upper edge of the float, but some designs specify the center of a ball float. The correct reading plane is usually marked on the body or given in the instruction sheet supplied with the meter.
The second step is to check the scale unit. Air flow meters are commonly scaled in L/min, m³/h, SCFM, or Nm³/h. If the scale is based on normal or standard conditions, the indicated value is valid only at the reference pressure and temperature stamped on the nameplate. Comparing a field reading with a compressor datasheet without converting units is one of the most frequent sources of confusion. For a closer look at the reading plane and scale position, see how to read the scale on a glass rotameter.
Accuracy and Calibration Considerations
A float type air flow meter is not a custody-transfer instrument. A typical glass or acrylic rotameter provides an accuracy of +/-2% to +/-5% of full scale, while selected glass types can reach +/-2% when calibrated under controlled conditions. Metal tube meters with a transmitter can deliver +/-1.5% to +/-2.5% of full scale, but the local indicator remains the working reference for most maintenance teams.
Calibration is performed with air under defined reference conditions, commonly 20°C and 101.325 kPa absolute. If the operating pressure or temperature differs from those conditions, the volumetric reading shifts. The pressure effect is significant in compressed air service; a meter calibrated at atmospheric pressure that operates at 0.6 MPa gauge will indicate incorrectly unless a correction factor is applied.
Verification procedures matter for audits and acceptance. In China, the national verification regulation JJG257-2007 covers the calibration and verification of float flow meters, so a meter that follows that regulation can be accepted by local inspectors without extra qualification work.
Glass, Acrylic, Metal, or Plastic Tube
Tube material sets the practical limits of the meter for pressure, temperature, media compatibility, and cost. Selecting by operating conditions is safer than selecting by habit.
| Construction | Typical pressure range | Typical temperature range | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass tube (LZB series) | up to 1.0-1.6 MPa | -20 to 150°C | General air, gas, and water service with clear visibility |
| Acrylic tube (LZM series) | up to 0.3-0.7 MPa | 0 to 60°C | Low-pressure gas, RO water, medical devices, panel mounting |
| Metal tube (LZ series) | up to 4.0 MPa or higher | up to 200°C or higher | High-pressure air, steam, opaque or hazardous fluids |
| Plastic tube (LZS series) | up to 0.5 MPa typical | 0 to 60°C | Corrosive gas, water treatment, cost-sensitive installations |
For clean, dry compressed air in a normal plant environment, a glass tube meter such as the LZB DK800 mini gas flow meter provides a clear reading at moderate cost. If the line carries air at high pressure or in a location where glass breakage is a safety concern, choose a metal tube variable area meter, which can also accept a transmitter for remote indication.

Before ordering, confirm the following points with your supplier:
- Operating pressure and temperature at the meter location, not just at the compressor discharge point
- Minimum and maximum expected flow in the units you actually need, such as L/min, m³/h, or SCFM
- Connection size and type: threaded, hose barb, flange, or panel mount
- Media quality: dry air, oil-laden air, humid air, or aggressive gas
- Mounting orientation: most meters must be installed vertically with upward flow
- Required options: alarm contacts, 4-20 mA transmitter, or an integrated needle valve for manual flow control
The last point is easy to underestimate. A float type air flow meter is a measuring device, not a control valve, but it can be combined with an adjustable valve when manual throttling is sufficient. When you need to alert operators or protect a machine against low or high flow, choose a version with alarm contacts, such as a gas flow meter with alarm, so the reading becomes part of your monitoring or interlock scheme.

Install the meter within about 5 degrees of vertical, with flow entering from the bottom. Avoid installing directly downstream of a control valve, elbow, or reducer; give the meter a straight upstream run of at least five pipe diameters when the layout allows. Pulsating flow from a reciprocating compressor can make the float bounce; a small damping chamber or volume bottle upstream usually cures this.
Keep the tube clean. In air service, condensed water or compressor oil can fog glass and acrylic tubes and make the scale difficult to read. Install a filter dryer upstream when the air is wet, and inspect the tube bore and float periodically for deposits. If the float sticks, check for foreign particles before assuming the meter is out of calibration.
Finally, remember that the rated accuracy of a float type air flow meter is valid only under the calibration conditions stated on the nameplate. At other operating pressures, apply the manufacturer's correction formulas or return the meter for recalibration.
A float type air flow meter will not provide the diagnostic detail of a digital flow transmitter, but for most air, gas, and purge applications, its simplicity is exactly the point. It gives a repeatable, visual, and low-cost reading that a technician can verify in seconds.
Yuyao Kingtai Instrument has manufactured float flow meters for decades and is one of the drafting units of the national verification regulation JJG257-2007.
